Cakes, Cakes and More Cakes / Torta, torta és még több torta

Back to blogging. Finally. Due to the extreme workload in the past few weeks I simply didn’t find time to post anything.

I’m in definitely cake “baking” mood. In February I made only cakes in miniature, nothing else. So here are the end results (tonnes of chocolate, physalis and mushroom):

I managed to finish the hedgehog cake, but I like it way too much to sell at this moment, (especially the eyes of the hedgehogs):

Made some luxurious, pastel coloured  meringue towers and cakes too:

I baked some fresh lemon cakes as well:

And finally stuffed tomatoes for a party table:

See you soon,

Orsi

Vissza a blogoláshoz.

Sütöttem néhány üdítően friss citromtortát is:

Végül töltött paradicsomok egy party asztalhoz:

Szép hétvégét,

Orsi

Salle Bleu / Blue Room / Kék szoba

Salle Bleu/ Blue Room/Kék szoba

Finally I finished the blue room and thought to share some photos about it.

Before I write about the room itself, I have to admit I hate (or at least don't like) brown colour... Except when it comes in a form of chocolate. There is only one colour I hate more: beige. That is not a colour. That is dullness.... same as keeping not real fish in the fishtank, but 2-dimensional cardboard cutouts...
I think we should be brave and should use more vivid and lovely colours in our surroundings. And that is the point where I tell you there is a perfect brown colour combination: brown with blue or with muted bluish turquoise. If you know the Vera Bradley brand maybe you know they had a design years ago, called Java Blue, it was awesome (unfortunately discountined)! So I think well hidden in my mind this colour combination suggested the Blue Room.

The Blue Room is a small study-living room in a French country castle with a view to the castle’s park.

The room is finished with a marvellous wallpaper, hardwood floors with a luxurious Persian carpet, simple but cosy furniture and a comfy looking chaise longue.

The blue furniture was painted and aged by me and I made the chaise longue 2 weeks ago.

As I mentioned beforehand, the room’s idea started a year ago. That was the time, when I picked up the good old Snape’s box, which had been laid in the cupboard for 6 years. A box, which was contained the furnishing of Severus Snape’s never-built Hogwarts apartment. I was merciless and painted some of them to pale blue - duck egg blue (sanded first, then painted brown, then sky blue, than two layers of lime-tilleul mixture and sanded back again) and some to pale pink. Yes, PINK. And I enjoyed it. I planned to bring them to the Vienna Miniature Festival, but I fell in love with the blue ones and kept them. Later I decided to build a room around them. I was pretty sure about what I want in it, and wanted to keep the colour scheme very simple but grandiose at the same time. The floorboards are originally mahogany, painted to deep, melted dark chocolate colour, repeated the same on the wall panels. The wallpaper reflects the baroque era, the pattern is light and feminine, but the colour makes it a bit manly, especially with the wall panelling. The carpet is actually not a carpet, but a small, fancy tablecloth I got from my sister 8-9 years ago, but it has beautiful colours and looks like a luxurious Persian rug, therefore I decided to use it as carpet.

The railing is a real life one, I like its curves and it provides an elegant finish to the room. I chose stark white colour as it matches well with the desk’s marble top and lighten the room a bit, but went for a dramatic effect and covered the ceiling with golden leaves (painted it brown first, then gilded).

As there is a brown door in the room I thought to put something brown on the opposite wall too just because of symmetry. (Asymmetry looks terrible in small places, especially in miniature and ruins the elegant effect completely. You don’t need to put the same furniture, colours, etc. but somehow you have to synchronize your items.) I chose a small brown table and a corner cupboard, which is completely different in style than the blue one, but I think it looks good in that corner. Chandelier and wall sconces were bought years ago and now turned out to be the perfect ones for this room.
The picture on the wall is a portrait of Marie Antoinette by Mme Vigée-Le-Brun. I intended to keep even the food in these colours too: mini St. Honorés, éclairs sit on the cakestand and you can see a box of chocolate petite fours on the chaise longue.

I hope you like it, and don't forget: use real colours, not just beige and off-white, be kind and happy, it is your choice  :)

Have a nice week,
Orsi

Akkoriban vettem elő a jó öreg Piton dobozát, ami 6 évig pihent a szekrényben.
A falon lévő kép Mme Vigée-Le Brun portréja Marie Antoinette-ről.

Orsi

Happy Birthday Little Princess!

I spent some days on this week with food making. It sounds strangely, but I missed it.... First I just made some apple and pears:

then decided to make something not too fancy, but lovely, so I made a chocolate fountain with ripe strawberries, biscuits and marshmallow. Somehow I was in pink mood and made pink candies and pale pink meringues to upgrade the scene. I plan to sell the chocolate fountain, but probably will keep the second tray with the pink and green plates.

And now, as I don't have any marshmallow, candy or chocolate in my pantry, I think I will eat an apple...
I can tell you it is really-really hard to make yummy and tasty food and eat nothing of it :-(
See you soon,
Orsi

Something Posh and Something Homemade

Let me clarify something. I'm not only a miniaturist, who makes miniature food. I love food and eating.... I spend time with looking for recipes in cookbooks, stand in the kitchen and cook either use an old family recipe or try a totally new one found on the internet.
The "Something Posh" is my Chocolate box cake, which is actually more a tower of boxes than a simple chocolate box. I must admit I'm a chocoholic... so it was pretty obvious choice to make a chocolate cake, but I wanted to make something extraordinary... and this was the outcome:

The cake is 3 staggering gift boxes, partially open (except the top one) with loose ribbons. The boxes are chocolate cakes covered with blue marzipan, the top of the boxes are separate unfilled cake layers covered with marzipan too. The partially open bottom layer is decorated with a pale blue sugar layer, which incarnates silk paper, and Belgian chocolate stars and truffles pour from the open box. As blue goes particularly well with silver, I used the tiniest silver beads (if we talk about real cake these are edible sugar beads of course) to decorate the cake with them and used some dark chocolate roses to embellish the feminine line. The cake became a big hit, it was published in the Spanish Miniaturas magazine as well and now it is in a loving home in the U.S.
Something homemade: I'm a "berry-fan" too, I hardly can imagine a summer without ripe strawberries, juicy blackberries and without those fresh and perfect blueberries. So it is a faboulous blueberry-mascarpone cobbler (thanks God and the Italian for the mascarpone and ricotta), simple and yummy. It is perfect for a late summer afternoon indulgence with fresh lemonade or tea if the weather turns colder.

My tiny cobbler on the cookbook's photo:

My newest project I mentioned is on its way, but it will take far more time than I thought, so no photos yet.  I hope it will change by the end of the week. Fingers crossed....
